Why Learn EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is both a fast-acting method of treatment for several common mental health ailments and a theory about how the brain processes, stores, and recalls information.
EMDR heals without drugs and concerns for the related side effects. Instead, it’s one of only two therapies recommended by WHO for treating mental health trauma in children.
With EMDR, therapists get to heal their clients and transform their lives instead of just treating or covering up symptoms. Clients aren’t forced to share information, thoughts, and experiences they don’t want to but are still able to make significant progress.
As the popularity and demand for EMDR continue to soar, becoming an EMDRIA-approved EMDR therapist will benefit your mental health career and practice as you continue to make a substantial difference in your clients’ lives. And EMDR plays well with other therapies.
You Can use EMDR Therapy to treat:
- PTSD
- Trauma
- Depression
- Post-partum Depression
- Phobias
- Stress
- Recurring Nightmares
- Addiction
- Anxiety
- OCD
- Obesity
- Grief
…and more, as the list of EMDR therapy’s applications continues to expand.
EMDR Therapy Training Frequently Asked Questions
Must I be licensed to participate in EMDR training?
No, there are eligibility requirements on this website, but briefly all that is required is the completion of one year of a graduate program in mental health with access in a supervised practicum to clients in which to practice and develop your EMDR skills.
I don’t see many trauma patients, is EMDR worth learning?
EMDR was initially researched targeting trauma victims. Since then, there have been literally hundreds of academic studies showing EMDR to be effective with most Axis I diagnose. A simple way to understand what EMDR does, is this: If someone thinks of a memory, any memory, and has some level of disturbance about that memory then the memory is not completely processed. EMDR jumps starts the incomplete process so the client is no longer in distress. When people say EMDR is for trauma, I usually say, “EMDR and trauma, that’s so 1990’s.”
How long does it take to master EMDR as a procedure?
EMDR is not procedure. It is referred to as part of the Adaptive information Processing Model (AIPM). It is a model of psychotherapy much like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Hypnosis or Psychodynamic Therapy. Like any other vocation, one can take a lifetime developing the skills to master this model or any other model.
